Price: Free for owners of Curiosity'due south Avengers ($40)
Genre: Multiplayer action/adventure

Marvel's Avengers: War for Wakanda has the aforementioned charms as the base game — and the same issues. This gratuitous expansion to Marvel'southward multiplayer action game adds Black Panther as a playable character, besides as a substantial story campaign and a handful of new multiplayer missions. The price is right, and Blackness Panther is a welcome addition to the roster. But War for Wakanda can't do much to change the fact that Curiosity's Avengers can exist a confusing, tedious feel that tries to cram single-role player adventures into a game designed effectually a multiplayer core.

While War for Wakanda is probably worthwhile for dedicated Avengers fans who are in the mood for some new content, information technology's a tougher sell for more casual fans. Since the expansion is free, yous accept nothing to lose by checking it out. Simply if yous haven't touched Avengers since you completed the campaign last September, War for Wakanda will probably remind you lot why.

Curiosity'south Avengers: State of war for Wakanda review: What'due south new?

If you lot oasis't played Marvel's Avengers before, information technology's an action/adventure game where yous control a variety of Marvel superheroes, leveling up their skills and gear equally you go. There'southward a single-role player component, where you guide the characters through an original story, and a multiplayer component, where y'all team up with other players to run more than difficult missions for ameliorate equipment. Each graphic symbol has a markedly different play style, with unique skills and items.

For a more than detailed breakdown of gameplay, you can check out our original Marvel'south Avengers impressions. The basic premise hasn't changed in State of war for Wakanda, but the bandage has. Rather than Ms. Marvel, our point-of-view grapheme this time around is Black Panther, aka King T'Challa of Wakanda. When recurring bad guy system Avant-garde Idea Mechanics (AIM) attempt to invade his technologically rich African nation, Blackness Panther teams up with the Avengers to oust the villains.

The big highlight here is Blackness Panther himself, who represents the game'southward ninth playable Avenger. (Previously, the roster comprised Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, Eagle and Kate Bishop.) Unlike the last two downloadable characters (the Hawkeyes), Blackness Panther is a melee hero, focused on technical combos, precise parries and building upward energy for devastating attacks.

Blackness Panther'south fundamental conceit is his "Intrinsic energy" bar, which allows him to store ability as he successfully blocks attacks. As he levels up, he tin channel this free energy into powerful attacks, which may involve pouncing on foes, launching himself off of nearby walls or keen through an enemy's baby-sit. Black Panther's abilities experience true to the character, and help set him apart from whatsoever Avenger we've played every bit before.

The trouble is that while Black Panther is a well-designed character, Marvel'due south Avengers still simply isn't that much fun to play. The more than technical skills are often not worth the effort when light and heavy attacks well-nigh always suffice. Furthermore, no thing what you do, yous'll have to contend with needlessly big enemy wellness bars and swarms of foes that overstay their welcome past a considerable margin. After pummeling an unremarkable marksman or robot into submission for the hundredth time, I started to wonder what kept people coming back to Marvel'due south Avengers, anyway.

The respond must be "the multiplayer," since it'southward admittedly satisfying to pick the graphic symbol who suits you best, hone your skills with friends and somewhen get the best possible "version" of your Avenger, complete with your favorite classic costume.

Curiosity'southward Avengers: War for Wakanda review: Story campaign

Still, that's not actually what the unmarried-player experience feels like, and State of war for Wakanda is primarily a unmarried-histrion thing. (Although, to exist fair, you can play through the whole story with up to three friends.) Just like the previous story campaigns, the levels in War for Wakanda experience like they were designed for multiplayer matches, even when information technology'southward to their detriment.

In most State of war for Wakanda levels, Blackness Panther and 3 other Avengers land in the heart of a lush jungle. They traverse a needlessly big, open up-ended battlefield, occasionally stopping to fight enemies or pick upward better gear — if they experience like information technology. The story objectives nigh e'er boil down to "reach this waypoint" or "solve this embarrassingly elementary puzzle." The repetitious rainforests, cliffsides and ancient temples don't add much of a tactical challenge, save that you'll occasionally have to do a bit of imprecise platforming.

Occasionally, though, you'll accept to put upwardly with a truly hellacious set piece: a battle against 1 of AIM'due south gargantuan FUSE drills. To call these encounters "excruciating" is somehow an understatement. While fighting off hordes of enemies (most of whom accept ranged weapons, and can fling y'all across the battleground like a noisome insect), y'all'll have to target the drill's weak points, some of which can shoot fire or lasers at you.

(Paradigm credit: Square Enix)

Y'all'll and so have to jump up a series of floating platforms, which usually ends with an enemy flinging y'all to the ground, where you'll take to start the tiresome process all over once more. If you employ AI companions, they usually don't follow your lead; if you fail, you have to start the whole FUSE section over over again.

The existent kicker, however, is that the game requires you to do this twice.

The "story" office of the story campaign is besides a fleck of a letdown. Perennial B-list Marvel villains Ulysses Klaw and Crossbones lead a team of mercenaries into Wakanda and attempt to plunder the company's Vibranium stores. Black Panther and his royal courtroom, as well every bit the Avengers, fight back. That'south near it.

If you pitched the virtually generic version of a recognizable Black Panther arc, it would sound something similar War for Wakanda. The story has no twists or turns to speak of, and doesn't practise much to advance the ongoing AIM arc that'due south carried Curiosity'southward Avengers then far.

I exercise have to give the game props for its characterization of Black Panther, however. While the contempo pic sanded off some of T'Challa'southward rough edges, the game remembers that he has a dark side. At his all-time, Black Panther is noble and proud; at his worst, he'southward suspicious and arrogant. War for Wakanda portrays both sides of the grapheme, although it doesn't have enough depth to really explore either one.

Marvel's Avengers: War for Wakanda review: Visuals and audio

State of war for Wakanda looks very good, at least on the PS5. The country of Wakanda, and the majuscule urban center of Birnin Zana in particular, positively pop with Afrofuturist details. Wakanda is a colorful identify, from its azure skies and verdant rainforests, to the scarlet browns of its ancient tramways. You can besides collect plenty of cool Blackness Panther costumes and profile images.

The music and audio effects go the task done, simply I had mixed feelings nearly Black Panther'due south vocalism. Christopher Judge is a fantastic actor in shows similar Stargate SG-i and games similar God of War (2018), but as T'Challa, his emphasis is inconsistent, and his operation can exist expository. Absolutely, this might too exist an issue with the underwhelming script.

Marvel's Avengers: State of war for Wakanda review: Verdict

Marvel'southward Avengers: War for Wakanda is neither amend nor worse than the chief game. Information technology'southward still a cool showcase for some love Marvel characters. It also nevertheless tin't quite decide whether information technology'south a single-player game with optional multiplayer missions, or a multiplayer game with a unmarried-actor onboarding section.

While the protagonist and setting both work to War for Wakanda's advantage, neither 1 improves the overall Avengers feel that much. And so again, the expansion doesn't toll anything extra, so you've got nothing to lose but your afternoon.
